"For this also a new mindset is needed as in the late part of that century (1800s). By the beginning of the 20th century, the technology (electricity) came into wide use in factories, but strangely, it provided little tangible benefit at first.

The problem, as it turned out, wasn’t with electricity, but the factories themselves. In a steam driven plant, machines had to be organized around the power source and the first factories powered by electricity were designed the same way. Work processes changed little and productivity barely budged.

It took about thirty years for a new generation of managers, who had little memory of steam plants, to realize that factories could become much more efficient if they were designed around workflow. Once that happened, soared and industry, along with quality of life, was transformed.

In much the same way, although computers and the Internet have been around for decades, we are just beginning to (digitally) transform our enterprises to make full use of information technologies. To a great extent, we are still very much like those turn of the century managers who were designing factories - in our case target IT landscapes, target enterprise architectures and capabilities- around a steam turbine that no longer existed - being in our case legacy applications, and on-prem and no perception of cloud compute, and adding even more technical debt than reducing it in a landscape at higher operational cost and inefficiency.

IPAAS

Integration Platform as Service (iPaaS) is the successor of the traditional code-heavy Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). The ESB was introduced end of 1998, and although the concepts are solid, the technology and platform is not and the project failed after substantional efforts and cost.

As dating back allmost 20 years, the platform and technology of an ESB should be considered as legacy and an unwanted increase of technical debt. The platforms are still heavey code based and product development has been usually minimized through the consolidation in the market through mergers and acquisitions (M&As), and as a more than often witnessed result of the M&As, yearly license subscription based pricing increased without or minimal increase of functionality and unclarity on the roadmap as usually done after a M&A.

More than often, the an already existing ESB in a landscape needs to replaced as it is for example end-of-life (EOL), by a M&A of the vendor, yearly recurrent licensing is increased substantially, while the vendor minimizes product development and cost for this as much as possible, and remains unclear on the (long-term) roadmap to her clients and/or no central management plane is available. Such a plane is a must for icident automation, incident classification, incident information, escalation policy management, role based scheduling and & self-service workflow schedule management. From this perspective, role based access should also be available in the cloud plane, and being able to configure and be able to have mult-user and group alerting.

Also the option should be available for integration of monitoring and logging with existing enterprise management, such as Splunk or Nagios, centralize all logging in an organisation. Such an integration should be preferrably done with APIs out-of-the box available in the cloud plan and that one can call, also within the operating model and daily business for example the employed operational mode of DevOps, NoOps, ChatOps, and/or Chaos Engineering.

Furthermore, logging should preferable be done to an event-based pattern due to the amount of data, and to have (near) realtime insights and analytics, and not to a database as those are often relational, and therefore lesser equiped for this capability.

Replacing an existing conventional code-heavy ESB with another one, that is also conventional code-heavy and can be grouped under the same header as the already existing ESB, is a replacing legacy with legacy, and thus only increasing more and more the present unwanted technical debt, and having the same long time-to-market of intefaces and keep on having the same problems.
